A pledge to create a sexual violence-free India was taken by women and social activists at an awareness campaign organised here on Saturday.

Those who had gathered for the campaign near the Kattabomman Statue resolved to fight sexual violence through peaceful and legal means.

Expressing concern over the increase in instances of violence against women, speakers at the campaign said that over 500 cases of sexual violence against women were registered in the State in the first nine months of last year. Complaints of sexual violence had increased by nine per cent in 2011-12 over the previous year. Over 2.28 lakh complaints were registered all over the country in 2011 for sexual violence against girl children, adolescent girls and women. They included 24, 206 cases of rape.

The campaign, organised by the Madurai Non-Formal Education Centre, also paid homage to victims of sexual violence. The participants vowed to dedicate themselves for protection of women against any form of violence.
