People’s Union for Human Rights sought the ban on forum that unites non-Dalit community organisations to work against the struggle of Dalits for human rights.
A meeting organised by the union here on Saturday passed a resolution to this effect. Another resolution said that such a forum to unite non-Dalit community organisations was against the Constitution.
The meeting organised to discuss the death of the Dalit youth, Ilavarasan of Dharmapuri district, after an inter-caste marriage, condemned the casteist forces that led to his death.
The union wanted the State and Centre to formulate special legislation to prevent honour killings.
Stating that the police and the caste Hindu people humiliate and ostracise the family of the person involved in inter-caste marriage, if he or she belonged to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the union wanted to book such persons to be booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Stringent punishment should be given to caste Hindu forces that threaten the girl belonging to their community, who had undergone inter-caste marriages, and her parents and try to separate the girl from the bridegroom belonging to SC/ST community, another resolution said.
Former Indian Administrative Officer, P. Sivagami, was among the writers and social activists who took part in the meeting presided over by advocate, Rajini of the union.
