Aruna Basu Sarcar, Chief Conservator of Forests and Director, Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust (GOMBRT), has appealed to the school teachers to create awareness of the preservation of Gulf of Mannar's marine animals among students.
Inaugurating a tuition class scheme sponsored by GOMBRT at a government school in Kalimangundu near here on Friday, she said the Gulf of Mannar was blessed with numerous species including rare marine animals such as Dugong Dugon (sea cow), whales, dolphins, corals, seahorses and sea cucumber.
It was one of the best marine biospheres in the world. It was the duty of people particularly those who were living along the seashore to protect the nature's gift.
The fishermen had a great role to play in preserving the marine wealth.
Ms. Sarcar added that the Trust had been undertaking various programmes to improve the livelihood of fishermen as well as spearheading a campaign to create awareness among the people, particularly fishermen, of saving the treasures of Gulf of Mannar.
The teachers should speak about the marine animals and its importance for preservation.
She said the tuition class was intended to support the students of coastal villages. Special class would be taken for one hour daily on school working days.
Teachers would be paid Rs.1,500 each per month.

The students would also be provided snacks.
