The Minister for Slum Clearance and Accommodation Control, S. Thangavelan, suggested that the Dharmapuri model of dairy farming could be replicated in Ramanathapuram district so as to improve the rural economy.

Distributing revolving fund to the Self Help Groups here on Wednesday, he said though the Dharmapuri district was said to be among the backward districts in the State he was impressed when he stayed there for Pennagaram by-election campaign with the way in which dairy farming had been carry forwarded by the rural folk. Each and every house had at least one cattle.

The people were systematic and meticulous in all aspects of cattle rearing right from following reproduction schedule of cattle, using the available animal husbandry hospitals, habitation maintenance, medication, milk extraction, marketing and other aspects.

He said due to the dedicated attitude of the people, which was supported by all stakeholders including the government machinery, banks, the rural economy had improved to a great extent.

Dharmapuri was among the leading districts in fulfilling the milk demand of Chennai. Mr. Thangavelan said he was of the view that the same mechanism could be introduced in Ramanathapuram district, which was another backward district in the State.

The government agencies, banks and other stakeholders should draw up a plan of action to effect changes towards milk revolution.

It would ultimately improve the rural economy.

Collector T.N. Hariharan said there were 9,550 Self Help Groups in the district. They had a saving to a tune of Rs.94.68 crore.

As many as 1,608 SHGs had been given revolving fund during the current year.

The target of forming 1,100 SHGs had been achieved.

Cheque handed over

Syed Salahudeen, Managing Director, ETA group of companies, handed over a cheque for Rs.7 lakh as public participation to the Collector to construct compound wall for the proposed composed yard of the Kilakarai municipality.
