Some unidentified persons burgled eight houses and a temple in and around Aralvoimozhi in the early hours of Tuesday which has created panic among the people here. The power cut during night hours became an added advantage to the burglars.
According to police sources, some unidentified persons took away the ‘hundi’ of Karadi Madaswamy Temple, situated near Vadakkur Government Higher Secondary School at Aralvoimozhi. After robbing the money and other items from the ‘hundi,’ they left the empty ‘hundi’ outside the temple premises.
Moreover, the burglars laid their hands on five houses at Thanumalayan Nagar in the early hours at Aralvoimozhi. They entered the house of Esakkiammal and after breaking the lock of the front gate, stole Rs. 4,500 in cash, studs and a pearl neck piece (‘Muthu Malai’), kept in the almirah. Similarly, a gang entered the house of Kaliyappan and lifted Rs. 800 and later entered the hotel of Shanmugha Ammal after removing a portion of the roof and lifted Rs. 500 kept inside the table. The thieves broke into the house of Chelliha and Babu of the same area but as there was no money and ornaments in their houses, they could not steal anything.
The same gang, as per the police version, tried to lift the motorbike parked in front of the houses of Raja, a crane operator, Kannan, working in a private firm, and Shiek Mohammed, running a footwear showroom in the same area. As they could not start the motorbikes, they abandoned the vehicles, just 100 metres away from the houses and escaped from the scene of crime.
In the recent days, the district witnessed a spurt in burglary and theft cases and hence the people in and around Aralvoimozhi urged the police to intensify night patrolling to instil confidence among the residents.
