A spacious building constructed on the Race Course Road here at a cost of nearly Rs.2 crore by the Madurai Corporation for its Zone-2 office is yet to be put to use after its inauguration by the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on September 23.

On Wednesday, it still remained locked with no sign of any activity. The Zone-2 office continues to function from the main building, Anna Maaligai. .

The building was constructed amidst expectations that a separate premises for Zone-2 would give easy access and quick attention for residents of 26 wards , from Ward 24 to 49, for their requirements related to drainage, sanitation, water supply, street lights, birth and death certificates, among other needs.

Senior officials and corporation staff connected to Zone-2 are expected to work from the new premises rather than getting cluttered in the main building.

Sources said that it would take some more time for the shifting since works with regard to furniture and other basic requirements for staff were pending.

Steps on

A. Palanisamy, Assistant Commissioner, Zone-2, told The Hindu that the new building would be occupied in 10 days and all steps were being taken for the shifting.

“There are some works to be completed for Internet connection and surveillance cameras,” he added.
