Police have sought clarification on allowing construction of some high-rise buildings around the famous Sri Meenakshi Amman temple, which was facing terror threat, a top police official said on Sunday.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police Velladurai told reporters here that a Government order, issued on January 30, 1977, about the building height, stated that it should not exceed nine metres around Meenakshi Amman temple.

But it was not known whether the buildings had been constructed with permission or without permission, he said.

Various ways of providing foolproof security including demolishing buildings that violated the norms would be considered, he said.
