Two country-made bombs were hurled at a car in which four persons, including two murder accused, were proceeding to a police station to sign the register as part of their conditional bail here on Thursday.
No one was injured in the incident, Superintendent of Police S. Maheswaran said.
An armed gang waited in a parked vehicle near a two-wheeler showroom at Nehruji Nagar where murder case accused M. Ayyappan (44) and M. Sivakumar (37), were passing enroute to the Virudhunagar West police station.
As the car neared the spot, two country-made bombs were hurled which exploded after landing on the vehicle’s bonnet and windscreen at around 10 a.m.
The driver of the car, S. Ravi, drove the vehicle to the Virudhunagar West Police station, where the occupants took refuge.
The two men are accused in the double murder of Thangapandiammal, an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor from ward 21 of Virudhunagar municipality and her husband, S. R. Nagarajan, on June 27, 2012 near the Desabandhu Ground. They were also involved in various other cases, including one relating to the kidnap of P. Mathiazhagan, S. Maheswaran said.
The SP said that they may have been targeted to avenge the double murder. The gang fled the scene in a Tata Sumo, which was found abandoned at Kalligudi in Madurai district.
Three special teams have been formed to nab the culprits.
