Custodial death: Body of youth cremated

Body of the youth, Malaichamy, who died under police custody at Aruppukottai taluk police station on Sunday evening, was cremated on Monday.

The police said that the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem was conducted.

After a judicial enquiry was ordered, Virudhunagar Judicial Magistrate II, Mumtaj, conducted an enquiry on Monday. The body was taken to Suklanatham where it was cremated.

Malaichamy who was brought to the station on Sunday afternoon after his uncle Boominathan complained that the youth had beaten up his grandmother under the influence of alcohol. The police said that he committed suicide by hanging with the window curtain in the toilet at the police station.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front and Human Rights Protection Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) have condemned the death in police custody.

In a joint statement, their functionaries, M. Muthukumar and M. Subburam, raised suspicion over the death.

They alleged that the police tried to cremate the body immediately after his death. However, only after the information spread among media persons, the body was taken to the Government Hospital for post-mortem.
