The Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC) has strongly condemned the attitude of the State government and Centre towards farmers agitating in New Delhi.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Most Rev. Antony Pappusamy, Madurai Archbishop, who is the president of TNBC, said that farmers were on a prolonged agitation not in the interest of a few but the whole of farming community of Tamil Nadu.

It was not an agitation for the sake of it but to reiterate the responsibility of the government. But, unfortunately, the government refused to hear their voice as farmers belonged to the unorganised sector. The handling of farmers’ issue by the government, which accorded priority for the development of corporates, was a matter of ridicule, the statement said.

The TNBC condemned the State government and the Centre, especially the Prime Minister, for not finding time to meet the agitating farmers and opined that the attitude of leaders who came to power in the name of democracy was actually denial of democracy. Instead of attempting to vulgarise the farmers’ agitation, the government in the State and Centre should do everything to redress their grievances.
