Tirumangalam Town police have picked up a 26-year-old man, T. Sirumundi of Kottayam, on the charge of attempting to drive away a sand-laden truck at Tirumangalam on Wednesday.

The police said that the lorry driver S. Selvaganesan (37) of Mallipudur near Srivilliputtur, was driving the lorry from Kulithalai near Tiruchi to Srivilliputtur. When the lorry reached the Rajapalayam road junction near the underpass of four-way highway, he stopped the vehicle around 8.30 p.m.

Even as the driver was checking tyre pressure, someone got into the driver’s cabin and started driving away the vehicle.

As the lorry proceeded towards Rajapalayam, the driver raised an alarm and the vehicle was stopped. The man behind the wheel was handed over to the police.

The police have booked a case of theft and are investigating.
