September 18, 2014 11:58 am | Updated 12:02 pm IST - MADURAI:

Police here foiled an attempt to kidnap realtor K. Chockalingam of Tindivanam from the house of his relatives here and arrested seven persons on Tuesday evening.

The police also seized a sports utility vehicle used for the kidnap. However, the main accused, I. Thanganarayanan of Tirunelveli district, is said to be absconding.

Chockalingam had promised to sell 15 acres of land in Tirunelveli district to Thanganarayanan a few years back.

After paying Rs.11 lakh in advance, Thanganarayanan found that the land had some encumbrance, following which he terminated the transaction and sought his money back. Chockalingam, who had agreed to repay Rs.17 lakh, with interest, however, did not keep his promise.

On Tuesday, when Chockalingam came to his relatives house, Thanganarayanan and seven others forcibly took him in the SUV. His relatives alerted the control room. The police intercepted the vehicle within a few minutes.
