The ‘bhoomi puja’ for the new building for the City Police Commissionerate was performed at a site along the Alagarkoil Road here on Friday.
The four-storey building, with a plinth area of nearly 40,000 square feet, will come up on a 2.3-acre land opposite the camp office of the Commissioner of Police (CoP).
CoP Sanjay Mathur said the long-felt need of the city for a new building for the commissionerate had at last become a reality with the State government giving the administrative and financial sanction for the building.
The government had sanctioned Rs.6.15 crore for the work, he said.
The Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation would take up the construction work which was expected to be completed in 16 months, Mr.Mathur said.
The new building would accommodate the offices of the Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioners of Police, and all special wings of the City Police.
“Offices of many special wings are now scattered across the city for want for space. The location of the new building, which will be very spacious, will provide better access to the people,” he noted.
At present, the commissionerate is located in a very congested place in the South Aavani Moola Street near Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. There is no access to the building through public transport.
Deputy Commissioners of Police Samant Rohan Rajendra and M. Rajarajan among others took part in the ceremony.
Superintending Engineer of Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation P. Kumareswaran, Executive Engineer M. Rajkumar and Assistant Executive Engineer S. Venkatachalapathy were present.
