January 31, 2013 02:16 pm | Updated 02:16 pm IST - MADURAI:

The Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday summoned Deputy Inspector General of Police (Tirunelveli Range), Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police, Nanguneri Deputy Superintendent of Police and a host of other policemen to enquire about shoddy investigation in a murder case that led to the imposition of death penalty on two convicts.

A Division Bench of Justice M. Jaichandren and Justice S. Nagamuthu ordered the officials to be present in the court on Thursday. The orders were passed during the hearing of a criminal appeal filed by the two convicts M. Katturaja (27) and S. Vettum Perumal alias Krishnan alias Kitchi (30) challenging the conviction and capital punishment ordered by a Sessions Court in Tirunelveli on December 26.

The convicts were accused of having murdered four individuals of whom one allegedly had an illicit relationship with the wife of the first convict. Though there was no eye-witness to the occurrence, the trial court had confirmed the conviction on the basis of circumstantial evidence.
