The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday stayed the operation of a recent notification issued by Madurai Kamaraj University for recruitment of 176 clerks in various sections and departments of the university.

A Division Bench of Justices K.N. Basha and K. Ravichandra Baabu granted the interim stay following a public interest litigation petition filed by Madurai Kamarajar University Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe Superior and Inferior Staff Association.

Appearing for the petitioner association, senior counsel M. Ajmal Khan contended that there was gross illegality in the recruitment notification as the authorities clubbed 51 backlog vacancies meant for SC/ ST candidates along with regular vacancies.

He claimed that the backlog vacancies should have been filled through a special recruitment drive meant for SC/ ST candidates alone. Failure to do so would amount to nullifying quota meant for the downtrodden, he added.
