Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), which were being kept in the Municipal Corporation office ahead of the 16th Lok Sabha elections, were transported to the Collectorate here on Thursday.
While the EVMs for the Madurai North and South Assembly segments will remain at the Corporation office so that ballot papers could be inserted in the next couple of days, those units meant for Madurai East, Madurai West, Madurai Central and Melur constituencies have been transported to the Collectorate for the same.
Returning Officer and Collector L. Subramanian said two ballot units would be used for every EVM in the 1,468 polling booths in the Madurai parliamentary constituency. “To accommodate the 31 candidates who are contesting and the NOTA option, we had to procure extra ballot units. The additional ballot units have arrived and we have also kept a reserve of five per cent of the units,” he said.
“We have decided to simultaneously carry out work on insertion of ballot papers at the Corporation office and the Collectorate since the large number of EVMs could not be accommodated in one place,” he said.
