The Union Fertilizers and Chemicals Minister, M. K. Azhagiri, laid the foundation stone for Velammal Vidyalaya CBSE School here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, he commended the Velammal Educational Trust for establishing a new school in a rural area. Mr. Azhagiri promised that he would take this part of the region (south) to the top in all spheres and bring in overall growth. “Give me some time…I will achieve it with your support and you all should reap the benefits,” he added.

For its part, the government would provide support wherever required. Be it for establishing an educational institution or an industry or a service organisation, the government would do its best, he asserted.

School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said that after Mr. Azhagiri became Union Minister, several primary and middle schools in the southern districts had been upgraded. “This is just the beginning and the people will see more progress,” he added.

The State government, through Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) and other initiatives, had set an innovative education model for the country. He lauded the Velammal institutions for stepping in a big way to provide education in this region.

Adi Dravidar Welfare Minister A. Tamilarasi, actor G. Prabhu and P. Viswanathan, an advocate and relative of former Home Minister P. Kakkan, offered felicitations. Film producer G. Ramkumar, elder brother of actor Prabhu, MLAs and local body representatives also participated.

Velammal Educational Trust chairman M.V. Muthuramalingam said that only when good educational institutions and industries were established all over the State,would the society be healthy and progressive. Problems such as caste clashes and unemployment could be prevented. The Velammal institutions would continue to deliver quality and comprehensive education to all its children, he said. A traditional ‘kuthuvilakku’ was lit by Kunjaravalli Muthuramalingam, wife of Mr. Muthuramalingam.

Mr. Azhagiri also inaugurated Dr. Sivaji Ganesan Block consisting of Thyagi Kakkan wing, P.A.C. Ramasamy Raja wing and Theerar Sathyamoorthy amphitheatre at the Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Viraganoor.
