As many as 500 students from various schools in the city took out a rally to create an awareness of prevention of sexual abuse of children from the Race Course Stadium on Tuesday.
Collector L. Subramanian flagged off the rally which was organised by the District Child Protection Unit. Addressing the students, the Collector said it was important to address the issue and educate people on the need to protect children and prevent such offences.
“We have to come together as a society to protect our children and it is your duty not only to protect yourselves but also to look out for others,” Mr.Subramanian said.
“Educational institutions play a vital role in spreading an awareness of such issues and the students should take the message forward,” he added.
Students from OCPM Girls Higher Secondary School, Kakkai Padiniyar Girls Higher Secondary School, LPNI Girls Higher Secondary School, Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School and the members of student organisations such as National Service Scheme and Youth Red Cross participated in the rally.
The students walked from the Race Course Stadium to Gandhi Memorial Museum carrying banners and placards with messages about prevention of child sexual abuse.
District Child Protection Officer M. Vijayalakshmi also participated in the event.
