Once again, it is time for festivities in the Temple City as Avanimoola Festival commenced at the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai on Sunday.

The stage is set for the grand enactment of ‘Thiruvilayadal’ at different places of religious and historical importance in Madurai.

The temple priests hoisted the celestial flag (kodiyetram) amidst chanting of hymns at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday to mark the commencement of the 18-day festival. The Avanimoola Festival features divine sports and the highlight of the festival is the coronation of Lord Sundareswarar on August 16.

“This is a very important festival for the temple and the public will enjoy the celebrations. Idols will be taken out in procession around the temple and there will be attractive events at Vaigai River too,” said P.Jayaraman, Joint Commisioner (HR&CE), Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

Like the Chithirai festival is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, the Avanimoola Festival is for Lord Sundareswarar. The festival concludes on August 21.
