Like in Chennai, the autorickshaws here shall operate with fare meters with immediate effect.
District Collector L. Subramanian, who held discussions with the transport department officials in this regard on Saturday, said that the State government had issued a G.O. that for the first 1.8 kilometres, the minimum charge/fare would be Rs. 25.
For every additional kilometre, it is Rs.12.
The waiting charge for every five minutes is fixed at Rs. 3.50.
In the event of hiring an autorickshaw in the night (between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.), an additional 50 per cent shall be collected on the total fare from the passengers.
The above fare shall be implemented with immediate effect, officials said.
However, the authorities clarified that to facilitate those autorickshaw drivers who have to recalibrate the electronic meters, 45 days time had been granted, by which period they shall comply with the order. Meantime, the drivers shall stick to the revised fare only from the passengers.
After a consumer forum from Coimbatore approached the High Court to revise the fare meters, the government had extended it to Madurai also.
