B. Abinesh, a class VII student of Thiagarajar Model Higher Secondary School and K.Vishal, a class X student of Mahatma School (CBSE) bagged the top honours in the junior and senior categories respectively at the finals of The Hindu -Young World painting contest held at Mahatma Montessori School here on Sunday. Three hundred and six students from several schools in southern districts of Tamil Nadu participated in the event.
Artists Thulasi Kannan and Gani judged the colourful creations of the students and N. Sulaiman, retired assistant director of art and culture, distributed the prizes to the winners.
“School and college students should visit painting exhibitions frequently. It will augment the creative interest of the students to paint from a very young age”, said Mr Sulaiman.
“Lot of parents take interest to know the art teachers of their children and they interact with them in the school. This is a welcome trend”, he added, and insisted that parents should encourage the children to learn arts.
“Give freedom to children and let them choose the art form they want to learn. Parents should not torment the children to participate and win prizes in the competitions. They should only motivate the children to take part in competitions and enhance their creative talent”, said Ms Thulasi.
The on-the-spot painting competition had topics such as ‘Supermarket’, ‘Joint family’, ‘Sports day’, ‘Circus’, ‘Beach’, ‘Library’, ‘Gardening’ and ‘Chemistry lab’ under the juniors category and topics such as ‘Space holiday’, ‘Magic show’, ‘Book fair’, ‘Hill station holiday’, ‘Road safety’, ‘News reporting’, ‘Republic day parade’ and ‘Field trip’ under the seniors category.
S. Suthakaran (VII standard) and T.G.Nagagovindan (VIII standard), students of Thiagarajar Model Higher Secondary School won the second prizes under junior and senior category respectively. J. Nikitha (VII standard) of Mahatma School, K.K. Nagar and S.K. Rishi Ganesh (IX standard) of Thiagarajar Model Higher secondary school won the third prizes worth under juniors and seniors category respectively.
The prizes consist of cash awards of Rs.5,000, Rs.3,000 and Rs.2,000 for the first, second and third places respectively under the senior category and Rs.3000, Rs.2000 and Rs.1000 in the junior category. A consolation prize of Rs.500 was given to seven participants in both the categories. Participation certificates were provided to all the participants.
The presenting sponsor for the competitions was MIOT Hospitals, associate sponsor was Amrutanjan, Dabur, beverage sponsor was Fruitnik, venue sponsor was Mahatma School and regional sponsor was CUB, Kumbakonam. The competition is an integral part of The Hindu ’s NIE initiative.
