The Tamil Nadu Assembly should pass a unanimous resolution demanding that the Andhra Pradesh Government immediately stop construction of check dams across the Palar river, Tamil Maanila Congress president G. K. Vasan said here on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Vasan said that all political parties should raise their voice in unison against the move of the neighbouring State, which went against the spirit of federalism.

He hailed the agitation by the DMK on this issue and wanted the Assembly to pass a resolution. Accusing the Centre of being ‘lethargic’ in resolving the fishermen issue, Mr. Vasan felt that the State government should exert more pressure on the Union government to secure the release of fishermen languishing in Sri Lankan jails and get compensation for the boats damaged by the island nation’s navy.

The Centre should also revisit the ceding of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.

Expressing shock over the suicide of Madurai youth K. Lenin after he was allegedly harassed over repayment of an educational loan taken by him, Mr. Vasan said that action should be initiated against those responsible for the coercion, and urged the government to pay adequate compensation for the family. He insisted that the AIADMK should fulfil all its election promises made to students.

He appealed to the Centre to provide a major share of electricity produced in the second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project to Tamil Nadu and also allay fears of the coastal people over the project.
