Lower Gundar Project would be expedited to augment drinking water supply to Kodaikanal, said Assembly Estimates Committee Chairman P.M. Narasimhan.
Talking to press persons after inspecting the drinking water project site near Lower Gundar area near here on Wednesday, he said this project would ensure adequate supply and scale down water shortage prevailing in Kodaikanal.
If necessary, additional funds would be provided to complete the project quickly. It would be a viable solution to the existing drinking water problem, he added.
Officials briefed the committee that the State Government had sanctioned ₹42 crore for implementation of the project long ago. At present, pipe-laying work within the town limit was on. A road work connecting the head works and the main road was pending.
The road and a bridge across a channel were necessary to resume work and to transport men and materials to the work spot, they added.
The chairman advised the officials to expedite the project and bring the project to public use by 2018. The committee members also inspected Manoranjitham dam, another drinking water source to Kodaikanal.
While inspecting Kodaikanal Government Hospital, the hospital doctors appealed to the committee to set up a CT scan centre to handle emergency cases. The chairman assured to recommend to the government to set up a CT scan centre in the GH.
After inspecting Adi Dravida Hostel, he said that infrastructure would be upgraded in the hostel for the convenience of inmates. He also assured to start a government arts college for men on the hill.
Reacting to the pathetic condition of roads, Mr. Narasimhan said that the government was planning to renovate ghat roads and rural roads leading to several villages on upper hills.
The committee will inspect Athoor Kamarajar dam, one of the prime drinking water sources to Dindigul city, anganwadi centres, school buildings and government headquarters hospital and conduct a review meeting with officials on Thursday.
