Share rich history with students, HMs told

Apart from teaching lessons, discipline and cleanliness should be taught to the students, said Madurai District Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan in Madurai on Friday.

Inaugurating an orientation programme for the heads of educational institutions run by the Adi-Dravida Welfare Department at the People’s Watch premises here on “human rights education”, he said that the teachers had the responsibility to disseminate not only good things, but also talk about the success stories of the icons of the nation who had contributed for the development of the society in very many spheres. The teachers should produce good citizens as the future relied on the younger generation, he asserted.

The good and bad in the society can be taught to the students through education as the children can differentiate between dos and don’ts; the right and the wrong. In the present scenario, such an orientation for the headmasters and headmistresses of schools from Theni to Kanyakumari districts, where Adi-Dravida children studied, would be an eye-opener and a good beginning in the right direction.

Further, Mr. Balakrishnan stressed that the teachers should tell about the sacrifices of Dalit leaders. “Tracing history is important since, only when we recall the past, the younger generation would know for themselves about the true picture and be motivated. Failure to share history with the young ones may prick our conscience at some point,” he underlined.

The SP reminded the teachers to be familiar with the Indian Constitution and also Thirukural couplets, since they were not only exhaustive and meaningful, but could be used as ready reference points. “The Constitution touched on the social justice, diversity, sovereignty, oneness….so on.” Moreover, by being clean and by leading a disciplined life, it would reflect well on every individual when they grow up, he asserted.

Earlier, E. Devasagayam, Director, Institute of Human Rights Education (IHRE) presided. Professor Arulraj, Deputy Director People’s Watch and Thirunavukarasu, Superintendent Adi-Dravida Welfare Department offered felicitations. The IHRE Regional Coordinator P. Chellapandi welcomed the gathering and project officer (IHRE) Sharmila proposed a vote of thanks.
