The mortal remains of solider V. Rajesh, 33, who suffered a massive cardiac arrest even as he was in his camp at Khirmu in Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday night last, were cremated here on Saturday afternoon with military honours.

Sources close to the family of the deceased jawan said Rajesh, after playing basketball with his friends at his camp in Khirmu of Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh, situated above 8,500 feet from mean sea level, suffered breathlessness around 8 p.m. even as he was relaxing at the camp.

Even though his friends rushed him to the hospital in the military camp and then to a nearby hospital in Khirmu, Rajesh, attached to 571 Army Service Corps Battalion, reportedly suffered a massive cardiac arrest and breathed his last shortly after 9 p.m.

After being flown to the Thiruvananthapuram airport via Guwahati and Bengaluru, a team of army officials brought the body to his house at KTC Nagar, where the wailing family members, relatives and the public paid their last respects to the deceased jawan, who is survived by wife Deepa, 26, and sons 3-year-old Vikash and 1-year-old Aadesh.

Senior army officials, District Revenue Officer P. Muthuramalingam, Rajya Sahba MP Vijila Sathyanand, MLAs H. Vasanthakumar and T.P.M. Mohideen Khan paid homage to the deceased solider at the cremation ground where the mortal remains were consigned to flames around 1 p.m.

The sources said Rajesh, who returned to his camp after spending a month with his family before Deepavail, had planned to start his business here after retiring from service in 2018.
