The Madurai Rural Police have registered a case of attempt to murder and criminal intimidation, among others, against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionary ‘Pottu' Suresh, his brother Saravanan, the then Assistant Commissioner of Police (Intelligence, Madurai City Police) S. Kumaravel and a Sub-Inspector of Police Parthiban on a complaint filed by a journalist Pandian, working with a Tamil magazine.
The complainant stated that an article published on October 22, 2009 in the magazine had described “Pottu” Suresh as an extra-constitutional authority and he acted like a Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu with the alleged blessings of Union Minister M.K. Alagiri.
As a sequel to this, anti-social elements kept threatening the journalist, who was residing in Thadayampatti near Usilampatti in Madurai district.
After “Pottu” Suresh filed a case against the journalist, the latter obtained a bail. To fulfil the bail condition, Pandian visited Tallakulam police station to sign the register.
During his appearance, the police officer reportedly informed “Pottu” Suresh about the presence of Pandian. Immediately, Suresh, accompanied by his brother Saravanan, the then ACP (Intelligence) Kumaravel arrived at the station and assaulted, he stated in the complaint.
The supporters of “Pottu” Suresh even ransacked Pandian's house in the village. Further, Pandian's father, Karuppiah, who died recently, was upset over the happenings. The complainant attributed death of his father to frequent threats and harassment meted out to the family members.
Though, he had lodged a complaint with the Elumalai police station, there was no action or protection. Hence, he preferred a complaint with the Superintendent of Police Asra Garg.
After thorough examination, the Elumalai police registered a case. Further investigation is on.
With “Pottu” Suresh detained in Palayamkottai prison on various criminal offences including land grab cases and under the Goondas Act, a fresh case of attempt to murder had been registered on Tuesday, police added.
