The trial run on distribution of tiffin and variety rice at ‘Amma Unavagam’ (subsidised tiffin centres) established at Melapalayam was held on Wednesday.

As idlis with sambar and coconut chutni were given free of cost during the trial run, huge crowd, mostly children and the aged, finished 1,200 idlis in an hour. In the afternoon, sambar rice and curd rice were given to the visitors and the quality of the food items prepared for the trial run was appreciated by all. Since the ‘food court’ with a store room and a hall with stainless steel tables has been provided with false roof, ceiling fans and exhaust fans, the visitors did not feel the summer heat.

A total of 120 self-help group members were recently sent to Chennai to get trained in the ‘Amma Unavagam’ being successfully operated there.

The trained workforce will be deployed in the 10 subsidised eateries to be opened by the Corporation here in a phased manner from June 1.

Mayor Vijila Sathyananth, Assistant Executive Engineer, Melapalayam Zone, T.Shanthi and others monitored the distribution of the food. Police were deployed in front of ‘Amma Unavagam’ to control the crowd.
