Distribution of ‘Amma’ Special Awards carrying a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each to 15 Corporation officials and employees marked the Republic Day celebration at Madurai Corporation on Monday.

As resolved in the Corporation council meeting in the past, Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa gave away the awards, mostly to teachers, who had helped in achieving higher results, and to bill collectors, who had collected higher taxes.

Addressing the gathering after unfurling the national flag, Mr. Chellappa said the Corporation was maintaining roads to a total stretch of 1,572 km in the city limits. It had been removing sand from roads on a daily basis, he said.

Roads laid

In the last three years, roads to a total length of 72 km were laid at a cost of Rs 6.05 crore.

A total of 500 deep borewells were sunk at a cost of Rs 34 crore to overcome drinking water shortage in the city last year.

A total of 4,000 street lights would be put up in the 28 newly-added wards, he said. Commissioner C. Kathiravan, MLA R. Sundarajan, Deputy Mayor K. Diraviyam, and Deputy Commissioner C. Meenakshi were among those who were present.
