Madurai Division of the Southern Railway would close all the 376 unmanned level crossings in the division in the next three years to enhance safety in rail operations, the Divisional Railway Manager, A.K. Goel, has said.
Addressing the 57 Railway Week Celebration here on Friday, Mr. Goel said that the division was converting a large number of unmanned level crossings into manned level crossings and subways in a phased manner to enhance safety in rail and road operations.
Many unmanned level crossings were closed and traffic diverted to the nearby manned level crossings.
The divisional officers were holding discussions with the District Collectors with regard to closing of unmanned level crossing, he said.
Multi-functional complex
Mr. Goel said that the construction work of multi-functional complex at the Madurai railway junction has been completed and it would be opened shortly.
Train services on the newly gauge converted line between Tirunelveli and Tenkasi would commence shortly, he added.
Mr. Goel appreciated the divisional officers and staff of various departments that have got best efficiency shields at the zonal level.
The shields have gone to the Engineering, Medical, Security branches of the division.
Similarly, the Health Unit in Tirunelveli has been adjudged the best maintained health unit.
The best passenger amenities shield was shared by the Commercial Branch of Madurai division with Tiruchy division.
The Stores Branch was awarded with the Best Minor Depot shield, he added.
Senior Divisional Medical Officer Padmalatha, and the Divisional Security Commissioner, M. Ramesh, along with seven others got individual awards from the General Manager, Southern Railway, Deepak Krishan.
Mr. Goel gave away divisional prizes to several railway officials and employees for their meritorious service.
Additional Divisional Railway Manager, V. Ajithkumar, and other officials were present.
