Toilet facilities will be provided in all schools in the district by converging all schemes like Sarva Siksha Abhyan and other State government schemes. Equal importance will be given for providing protected and purified drinking water to schools throughout the year uninterruptedly, said Collector N. Venkatachalam.

He was presiding over a special meeting to assess performance of Sarva Siksha Abhyan schemes at the Collectorate near here on Tuesday.

The State government had allotted Rs.2.95 crore for constructing toilets in 1,368 schools and Rs.73.97 lakh for providing toilet facilities at Anganwadi centres in the district. Work had already commenced in many schools and Anganwadi centres.

Toilets were constructed in 1,199 Anganwadi centres so far. Rest of the centres will have toilets before March 2013, he pointed out.

Toilet facility was important to inculcate clean habits in students, ensure health of individuals and protect people from several contagious diseases. All efforts were on to achieve cent per cent in providing toilets to all schools in the district by the end of this financial year.

He advised revenue officials to find a suitable place for construction of toilets in schools that did not have sufficient open place for the facility.

Teachers should conduct special classes for students to create awareness on importance of personal cleanliness, health and clean surroundings.

An integrated approach was essential in achieving the target in providing toilets to schools. A meeting with union officials, parents, teachers and school authorities, and students in this connection should be convened immediately at panchayat union level.

Equal importance was given for providing protected drinking water to all schools.
