Alert pedestrians hand over three chain-snatchers to police

Public nabbed three chain snatchers in the city and handed them over to the police.

Police said here on Monday that when Priyadarshini, wife of Manikandan of Munichalai, was walking on the road near her residence on Sunday evening, a person snatched her gold chain weighing about three-and-a-half sovereigns.

When she raised an alarm, alert pedestrians surrounded the snatcher identified as Alagusundaram and handed him over to Teppakulam police station. The incident had occurred near Khanpalayam.

A police officer said that the accused is an auto driver and had tried to escape in a waiting autorickshaw. Sensing trouble, the waiting autorickshaw driver escaped. A hunt is on to secure him.

Meanwhile, a senior officer interrogated Alagusundaram.

Teppakulam police are investigating. In another incident, Saraswathi, 38, wife of Subramanian residing in Thathaneri, lost her gold chain when two persons forcibly took it from her and fled.

In a swift action, public chased and caught the duo identified as Ramesh of Arapalayam and Prakasam of Karimedu. Investigations revealed that Prakasam had allegedly indulged in a couple of crimes and was wanted by the Karimedu police.

Two houses burgled

Two houses were burgled at B.B.Kulam and Sellur when the residents were away.

Police said on Monday that Latha, wife of Christopher of Radhakrishnan Road in Tallakulam police station limits, had gone to Tuticorin, and when she returned, she found the locks broken and valuables, which included 28 sovereigns, a mobile phone and a few silk saris, were missing from the almirah.

In another incident at Sellur, Leenavathi wife of Asaithambi, was away from her house when unidentified miscreants gained entry and escaped with valuables including 25 sovereigns of jewels and Rs 32,000 cash. The police are on the look out for the burglars.
