The Alagappa University has proposed to train more than 1,000 student-volunteers from the university and its affiliated colleges for the purpose of creating awareness among youth on the messages of Swami Vivekananda, Vice Chancellor S. Subbiah has said. Addressing an orientation programme on “Swami Vivekananda and Art of Living,” organised under the aegis of the Swami Vivekananda Centre for Higher Research and Education here on Thursday, he said the student-volunteers would propagate the ideals of Vivekananda among the student community.

“Nothing could be equivalent to human potential; and when it is used properly, it will bring welfare to individuals as well as the nation,” he said quoting Swami Vivekananda. The aim of education should be to create individuals who could stand on their own legs and lead an independent life, he said and appealed to the students to tread in the path shown by Swami Vivekananda for a fruitful and glorious life.

“Swamiji’s life itself is an example to emulate, as he could well integrate a clear goal, planning and action in his life,” he said adding Vivekananda’s clarion call to the youth “to arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached” should reverberate in the minds of the youth. Prof. V. Balachandran, Registrar in-charge, said Swami Vivekananda is a personality who has shown the righteous way of life to all youngsters. There were 55 crore youth population in India and the country’s development lay in their hands. The teachers should impart value-based education, he said.

R. Senthilkumar, Co-ordinator, Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari, said under the directions of the State Government, it had established the Vivekananda Centre in nine Universities. However, only in three universities, the Centres functioned effectively and Alagappa University was one among them. About 300 participants attended the programme.
