Advocate’s plea for treatment

Advocate M. Malaviya (31), arrested by the Madurai city police on Wednesday on a charge of assaulting a woman police officer, has moved the Madras High Court Bench here accusing the police of having beaten him black and blue after taking him in custody on Tuesday night and seeking a direction to shift him from the Central Prison here to a private hospital.

Passing interim orders on his petition on Thursday, Justice S. Vimala constituted a two- member committee of lawyer K.P. Narayana Kumar and M.R. Vairamuthu Raju, Dean of Government Rajaji Hospital here, to visit the petitioner in prison, ascertain his health condition and file a report in the court by Friday.
