“Adopt integrated approach to combat climate change”

August 30, 2016 02:54 am | Updated October 17, 2016 06:50 pm IST - MADURAI:

The need for adopting an integrated approach in mitigation measures to manage problems of climate change was emphasised at a meeting organised by the Madurai Productivity Council and Aditya Medical Trust here recently.

T. Velrajan of the Department of Civil Engineering, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, the resource person, said that the problem of climate change had a negative impact on agriculture, forest resources, animals, plants and human beings. Its impact on the economy lead to poor economic performance, high cost of living and negative growth rates. Climate change would also affect the society and culture in terms of displacement of people and missing out of good practices.

Mitigation measures, he said, were permanent and adaptation measures were temporary in nature. Mitigation measures included efforts to reduce or prevent emission of greenhouse gases, application of new technologies and renewable energies, reforestation and afforestation. The adaptation measures included rainwater harvesting, rain barrels, green roofs, waste water treatment technologies, construction of sea walls and raising public awareness. Use of alternative and appropriate green technologies would help to solve the problem of climate change.

According to a press release, Prof. Velrajan highlighted the integrated role of international institutions, governments, corporate, non-government organisations and individuals in following mitigation and adaptation measures to tackle climate change. G. Subramanian, president, Madurai Productivity Council, welcomed the gathering. G. Venkidusamy, vice-chairman, Aditya Medical Trust, spoke about the objective of the programme.
