The draw of lot for admissions to the 25% seats reserved under Right to Education (RTE) Act in schools for the entry-level classes will happen in all the matriculation and elementary schools in Madurai district on Monday.

According to officials in the School Education Department, the district has 5,895 seats in 157 matriculation and 302 nursery and primary schools. Through the online system of application, a total of 9087 applications have been received in the district for these seats. Madurai topped the number of applications in the State which had a total of 1.23 lakh applications.

N. Marimuthu, Chief Educational Officer, Madurai, said that a two-member monitoring team, comprising a staff from the School Education Department and another from the Revenue Department, has been formed for every school to ensure that the admissions are done as per stipulated procedures.

“These teams have been asked to be at the school at 9.30 a.m. The parents can visit any of the five schools they have given as preference around 10 a.m.,” he said.

He said that a lot will not be necessary if the number of applicants in a particular school did not exceed the number of seats available there.

“If there are more applicants, then drawing of lot will be done in the presence of the parents or relatives of the children and the monitoring officers,” he said, adding that all the applicants must meet the criteria mentioned for admissions under the RTE Act.

Sources at the department said that five children in excess of the number of seats available will be chosen from the lot. “If any of the selected students fail to take up admission or prefer another school where they get selected, these children will be accommodated,” an official said.
