Protestors submit petition to the District Collector, seek action

Members of the Tamil Tigers staged a protest on the District Collectorate premises on Monday alleging that the Right to Education (RTE) Act was not being implemented properly in a few private schools in the city.

“We had sent RTE applications for six children to be enrolled in LKG to the MAVMM Matriculation Higher Secondary School. The school, however, did not intimate the parents about the RTE admission process and told them later that the seats under the RTE quota were filled up through random selection,” alleged S. Perarivalan, secretary of the Tamil Tigers.

The protestors demanded that a fair RTE admission process be carried out in the private schools in the city, where the random selection procedure is done in front of the parents, so that there is no room for bias.

In this regard, the members of the Tamil Tigers and parents of a few children who had not managed to secure admissions through the RTE submitted a petition to District Collector L. Subramanian.

“While the Collector told us that it was not necessary for all schools to conduct their RTE admission process in front of the parents, he has said that he will look into the matter,” the protestors also said.
