Condemning police attack on the cadre of Communist Party of India (Marxist) during the party’s 22nd State conference that concluded here on Tuesday, the office-bearers of the party demanded stringent action against police personnel.
Four cadre, including a five-year-old boy, came under attack in a lathi-charge by the police at Toovipuram-Anna Nagar junction after a wordy quarrel between the police personnel and the cadre over letting vehicular traffic for a while were enraged and it resulted in a clash here on Tuesday evening.
K. Kanagaraj, State executive council member, along with K.S. Arjunan, district secretary, K.P. Perumal, district executive council member, and D. Raja, town secretary of the party, approached the Superintendent of Police P. Mahendran and submitted a petition and demanded action against an ASP.
Based on complaints from D. Sekar (45), head constable and I. Jeyaraj (34), constable, who were also injured in the incident, Thoothukudi South and Central police have filed cases against Vimal and Vishnuvardhan, the injured cadres and others, under Sections 147, 148, 294 (b), 323, 324, 353 and 506 (ii) of IPC, sources said.
