Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad have demanded action against high-rise buildings, constructed against norms around Meenakshi Temple, here on Monday.
Staging a demonstration near District Collector’s office, led by its president Chinmaya R. Somasundaram and others, the agitators said that Madurai had been declared as a heritage city and though the laws were clear on the height of the buildings. "No action has been taken to demolish tall structures within a radius of one kilometre of the temple. Animals such as cows gifted to temples, as a part of fulfilling vow, were being sold in markets and even misused. The HR and CE department should take stock of the receipt of animals and maintain them," they said.
Thanking the State government for giving a lot of freebies to school and college students, the VHP members said they should be given to all deserving people and not based on caste, creed or community and that the government should introduce prohibition in the State.
They demanded that the government should withdraw reservation system on education and employment opportunities and instead provide them on merit basis.
