Thousands of devotees drawing the Sri Tyagaraja Swamy Temple's Aazhither in Tiruvarur on Sunday.

Ecstatic cries of ‘Aarrora…Tyagesa…’ rent the air as a sea of devotees descended on the sacred town of Tiruvarur on Sunday to participate in the renowned Aazhither festival of the Sri Tyagaraja Swamy Temple on Sunday.

The massive temple chariot had a remarkable run through the main thoroughfares of the town.

Festive mood pervaded the whole of Tiruvarur town on Sunday for the temple chariot festival held as part of the annual Panguni Uthram festivities of the temple. The temple is steeped in history as much as the town and the chariot itself. The Aazhither is perhaps the biggest in its category worldwide.

This year the festivities commenced on March 4 with the hoisting of the sacred flag.

The processional deity Sri Tyagarajar, which was in the Deasiriya Mandapam inside the temple complex, ascended the Aazhither on May 20 for the chariot run that was conducted on Sunday.

Separate chariots with deities of Sri Ambal, Sri Vinayakar, Sri Subramanyar and Sri Chadikeswarar were drawn around the streets with the Aazhither.
