Woman attempts self immolation at Collectorate

February 06, 2017 05:36 pm | Updated 05:36 pm IST - DINDIGUL:

A woman from Palani block attempted to self immolate before the Collectorate here on Monday condemning inaction of the police in taking action against land grabbers.

A. Ranganayaki (40) of A. Kalayamputhur poured kerosene over her body and attempted to set herself on fire as the police and revenue officials did not take action against her petition. She said that her neighbour had encroached upon her land and had threatened to kill her as she had approached the police to lodge a complaint.

A complaint was lodged with the police and petitions were given to the Palani Tahsildar and also to the Collector but no action had been taken so far. In a fit of rage, she attempted to set herself on fire. It was her second self immolation bid before the Collectorate. She had made a similar attempt on January 2 pressing for the same demand.

The police foiled her attempt and brought her to the Collector to whom she handed over another petition.
