Drinking water crisis took the centre stage during the weekly grievance redresssal meet held at the Collectorate on Monday as a good number of petitions seeking regular supply of drinking water was submitted to Collector M. Karunakaran.

A group of petitioners from Alavanthaankulam North Colony near here submitted a petition saying that their colony, comprising of 60 houses, was getting drinking water from the overhead tank at Thiriththu. After the North-east monsoon failed, drinking water supply to their colony was affected and the residents had to get drinking water from far off places.

Though complaints were registered with the officials concerned, no step had been taken to ensure adequate drinking water supply. Hence, the Collector should give appropriate instructions to the officials, the petitioners said.

Residents of Saravanapuram, Kalliyoor, Mettupatti and Kodangipatti sought drinking water connection to every house under Tamirabharani Combined Drinking Water Scheme and government’s assistance for constructing individual household toilets in their village.

A few more petitions seeking drinking water were also submitted to the Collector.

Cadres of Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam submitted a petition seeking compensation of Rs. 25 lakh to each family of the farmers who either died or committed suicide due to drought and consequent crop loss. Moreover, all crop loans should be waived. The State and the Central Governments should make appropriate amendments to ensure the conduct of ‘jallikattu’ during ‘pongal’ this year, they said.

People from Kuruvikulam submitted a petition appealing to the Collector to order relocation of the liquor shop in their area as drunkards were troubling the public coming to the nearby temples, hospitals and also students going to the government higher secondary school.

Villagers from Thamizhaakurichi submitted a petition seeking immediate and concrete steps to curb anti-social activities in their area. They said that anti-socials elements consumed liquor under the shades of thorny bushes during the day and used the secluded area for other unlawful activities in the dusk. Two youths who took steps to check these crimes were hacked recently, they pointed out.

“Considering the situation, the Collector should instruct the local body officials to remove the thorny bushes and install streetlights in the problematic area,” the villagers said.
