TIRUNELVELI: Dispelling the rumours about the measles and rubella vaccine to be administered to children aged below 15 years, Collector M. Karunakaran has urged the public to cooperate with the administration in shielding their children from these diseases through vaccination.

Addressing an awareness meeting organised on Tuesday, he said measles could not be eradicated though vaccination for this disease was being done since 1985. The Central government had decided to vaccinate the children free of cost against measles and rubella like the pulse polio immunisation campaign.

Children studying in all schools would be vaccinated through medical teams during the camp to be organised between February 6 and 28. Around 7,63,098 children between the age of 9 months and 15 years would be covered. Those who had got vaccinated in private hospitals for measles and rubella should also be vaccinated now, he said.

Dean, Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital K. Sithya Athiya Munavarah, Deputy Director of Public Health Ram Ganesh, and Head, Department of Pathology, TVMCH, Revathi Balan, participated in the meeting.
