Mortal remains of soldiers reach Madurai

The mortal remains of two army men from Madurai district, who lost their lives in the recent avalanches in Jammu and Kashmir, reached Madurai airport on Tuesday night.

One of them was Sepoy C. Sundarapandi (26) from Pallakapatti village near Tirumangalam, who was killed along with 13 other soldiers in the avalanche in Gurez Valley on Thursday.

The other person was Gunner M. Thamothara Kannan (26) from Vellankulam, also near Tirumangalam. Thamothara Kannan was among five soldiers who got trapped in an avalanche in Machil sector of Kupwara district. Although they were rescued after an arduous mission, they died later while being shifted to a hospital in Srinagar.

Revenue Minister R.B. Udhayakumar and Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao paid homage to the mortal remains of the soldiers at the airport on Tuesday night. Their last rites will be performed at the respective villages on Wednesday.
