Madurai: In a tragic incident, a second year medical student, M. Mohamed Shah (20) from Kollam district in Kerala, was found dead with multiple injuries, reportedly sustained when he fell from the terrace of the hostel building at Madurai Medical College on Wednesday morning.

The student was found dead behind the hostel mess. Police said the second year students staying in the hostel had gone to the terrace along with their batchmates for discussing arrangements for the 500th day of their batch around 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

While dispersing after the 30-minute meeting, the boys had noticed Shah sitting on the parapet of the terrace of the two-storey building.

“Two of the students had warned him against precariously sitting on the parapet,” said college Vice-Principal Meenakshi Sundaram.

Shah was found dead in the morning when the workers had come to the mess, said one of the medical students who had come to the mortuary at Government Rajaji Hospital where the body was sent for a post-mortem.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) P.VE. Arunshakthi Kumar, who inspected the scene, said that there was no marks on the body to suggest any foul play. “It looks like an accidental fall,” he said.

However, the police examined the call details of his mobile phone and are making enquiries based on the details. Shah had last used WhatsApp instant messaging service at 10.30 p.m.

The police were particularly concerned over the death that happened on Valentine’s day. They were also trying to get the details of his phone usage, including internet usage.

The students said that Shah used to be jovial and also studious. His father was working in the Gulf and his mother and other relatives rushed to Madurai on hearing the news. The body was handed over to them after the post-mortem.
