Madras University wins hockey tourney

V-C of Alagappa University exhorted the players to strive to achieve greater heights

University of Madras won the championship in the men’s section and Mysore University in the women’s section in the south zone inter-university hockey tournament held at Alagappa University here. University of Madras men’s team lifted the trophy after emerging top in the league matches which drew to close on Saturday. The Bangalore University finished second and SRM University and Acharya Nagarjuna University finished third and fourth places respectively in the five-day tournament. In the women’s section, Mangalore University finished runner-up and University of Calicut and Annamalai University finished third and fourth places respectively, a release here said. S. Subbiah, Vice-Chancellor, Alagappa University, who distributed trophies to the winners, exhorted the players to strive to achieve greater heights. A. Chelladurai Abdullah, President of hockey unit of Tamil Nadu, spoke. V. Sathyanarayana, tournament observer from Osmania University, urged universities to help the players hone their skills. About 1,100 players from 94 universities – 59 men and 35 women participated in the tournament held from December 27.
