HC seeks details on rural libraries

February 02, 2017 01:24 am | Updated 01:24 am IST - MADURAI:

The Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday directed the Principal Secretary as well as Director of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department to submit by February 15 details with respect to number of rural libraries established by the State Government in villages across the State under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (AGAMT) since 2006 and the number functioning at present.

A Division Bench of Justices A. Selvam and P. Kalaiyarasan passed the order on a public interest litigation petition filed by advocate R. Rajaselvan alleging that most of those libraries had become defunct now and the buildings constructed for the purpose had been converted into ration shops and other such public purposes. The petitioner sought for a direction to the two officials to revive those libraries and maintain them well.
