Stepping up the campaign to prevent use of banned plastic items, Corporation authorities initiated a door-to-door awareness programme in association with students of paramedical institute of Vadamalayan Speciality Hospitals on Thursday.

Flagging off a campaign vehicle and addressing the students, Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri said that the objective of the campaign to ban plastic goods was to save the environment. As a first step, the plan was to ban harmful plastic goods around Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. Once the campaign got translated into results, the city would be free from the plastic scourge, Mr. Nanduri said.

Hospital Managing Director V. Pugalagiri said the students would be engaged in disseminating knowledge about the harms caused by plastics. They would promote environment-friendly alternatives such as cloth bags or jute bags by distributing them to the public during the door-to-door campaign.

The students would cover Karumbalai, Alwarpuram, Tirupalai, Arapalayam and other places in the next 30 days from morning till noon. The Commissioner recalled the students’ efforts in a similar campaign in 2013 when dengue threat was prevalent. They visited 13,845 dwellings and educated the homemakers about the importance of clean environment inside and outside home.

The Commissioner has appealed to the institutions and students to join the campaign to support the plastic ban.
