TIRUNELVELI: A total of 8.62 lakh children between the age of 1 and 19 in the district will be given de-worming tablet (Albendazole tablet) as part of the special camps being organised as part of National De-worming Day.

Inaugurating the de-worming special camp at Corporation Middle School at Vannarpet in Palayamkottai on Friday, Collector M. Karunakaran said the special camp to administer the de-worming tablet to the children was being organised with the objective of protecting them from anaemia. The special camp is being conducted in all schools, anganvadis and primary health centres across the district to administer de-worming tablets to the children in the age group of 1 and 19 years. School dropouts, if any, children of gypsies and adolescent girls were being covered by the anganvadi workers and the field staff of Department of Public Health.

In Tirunelveli district, 8,62,823 children (between the age of 1 and 19) would be covered during the de-worming exercise. While the children below the age of 2 will be given either tablet or syrup, others would be given Albendazole tablet (400 mg), Dr. Karunakaran informed. The Collector appealed to the parents to ignore the rumours being spread by mischievous elements about the measles-rubella vaccine being administered to school children. Deputy Director of Public Health Ram Ganesh was present.

In neighbouring Thoothukudi district, District Collector M. Ravikumar inaugurated the camp at Mudivaithanenthal in the district on Friday.

He informed that 4,39,126 children across the district would benefit through the special camps.
