Supporters of former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri celebrated his birthday here on Monday.
Distributing saris, dhotis, sewing machines and food at many orphanages in the city and in a few neighbouring districts, the supporters also conducted medical camps at Old Age Homes on the occasion.
According to P.M. Mannan, former Deputy Mayor and a staunch supporter of Mr. Alagiri, they gave away these materials to the needy in Madurai city, Theni, Dindigul and other towns.
As per the wishes of Mr. Alagiri, there was not any fanfare like in the past as party president M. Karunanidhi had preferred not to celebrate his birthday in June last due to prevailing drought in the State.
In Theni, Mr. Alagiri’s followers distributed clothes and bedspreads to inmates of a home for the mentally ill.
Similarly, in Tiruchi city too, they gave cash awards to Plus Two and SSLC toppers in Corporation schools, his supporters said.
Mr. Alagiri, who had left for Chennai two days ago, celebrated his birthday with his family members in Bangalore, his supporters added.
