73 omni buses fined for various violations

As many as 73 omni buses were slapped fine for various violations and a total amount of Rs. 7,49,900 was collected as fine from the operators, a Transport department official said in Madurai on Thursday.

Following complaints of exorbitant fare being collected by omni bus operators to Chennai and other places, Collector Anshul Mishra had formed squads comprising the three Regional Transport Officers and their team of Motor Vehicle Inspectors. The teams had been checking omni buses at different locations, including Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand, prior to Deepavali season.

Inspection of the vehicles also revealed that the operators had not obtained permits.

No insurance cover

In one instance, the vehicle did not have insurance cover.

After recording the charges, check notices were served on the erring bus operators. Based on their explanation, the officials would take the next course of action, a press release issued here on Thursday said.
